the pain with Spain
Here we are, brought back down to earth by a brilliant Spanish team. They kept the ball in the ranks very cleverly. Our team put a lot of energy into getting the ball back. That rarely happened as I thought it would be. But the Spanish were also very capable at blocking free spaces for the German Team to slip through. Add to that a fear of losing the ball again after having fought so hard to get from the Spains. In the previous games the whole team of Germany ran forward as soon as they managed to get the ball. But with Spain standing so cleverly it was hardly possible for them.... and they didn't dare something creative most of the times.... AND Thomas Müller was missing... he might have been the missing link for trying something bold together with Özil and Lahm.
All that we can do now is congratulate the Spanish for their good football and wish them good luck for the Finale. Cause you know... how unbearable would it be if the Netherlands came back with the Cup. They'd be rubbing it in front of our noses all the time. No way!
But I've always said that SPain is going to win the cup. They've got a very strong team of whom most play in Barcelona the best team in the world. It will be very tough beating them in the next few years.
And now it's once more the small finale... the match about getting bronze or nothing at all. During the world cup 2006 when nobody expected our team to get anywhere near the quarterfinals winning the third place was a happy end. But I doubt a single player left in the team from 2006 has it in them to fight for this small triumph. I wouldn't have the heart myself either. This Team truly believed they could win the cup. The whole of GErmany thought so.
If I where Löw, I'd give a lot of second rank players a chance in this match. Player to whom the third place would mean something. Especially Schweinsteiger, Lahm and Podolski won't be able to motivate themselves enough for this match. I would instead have Kroos, Badstuber and Marin play for the third place. I might wanna replace one or two of the centre backs. Both played awesome but probably are exhausted especially after the match against Spain. Maybe giving Aogo and Tasci a chance to prove themselves in the Team.
anyways despite the many young players in the team I still belive that Uruguay would be appreciating a thris place a lot more than the GErmans. I don't know if I'll find it in my heart to watch the match.... but when given the chance I've never missed a single match our National team...

Semifinals
I guess I wasn't in the mood to write a blog entry after the phenomenal 4-0 victory over Argentina on Saturday. And I was exhausted. I just about managed to get back home without falling off my bike. I had been sitting at the public viewing area 3 hours before the match even started and it was too hot for my liking. But I really wanted and needed a place in the shadow to survive the match.
Anyways... after we had basically blown Argentina off the pitch one of the teams headed for the cup the football Spain played against Paraguay seemed so bad. All of a sudden it seemed like no national Team in the world would be able to beat Germany. Even I felt the excitement and thought that Spain was only one of two beatable opponents on our way to the cup.
But it took me only one day for a reality check.
After the victory over England everybody knew that England had never really put up a fight after the not given goal. In my opinion that match could have taken a completely different turn if the goal had been given. England would not have given themselves up like that.
Against Argentina we saw an even better Team of German players. They successfully kept one of the worlds best strikers away from their goal. That was the main reason why Germany managed to overrun Argentina like that, because their defensive abilities are medium and below. So far their strong strikers and midfielders were able to compensate that but without their abilities Argentina was vulnerable.
Now Spain is a completely different story. I agree that so far they haven't proven themselves to be the most dangerous and strongest Team attackwise. They did score but without showing a convincing concept.
It's their defensive abilities I'm worried about. I believe that Spain is quite capable of thwarting our attackers for a lot longer than 3 minutes. I really doubt we are going to get a lot of chances in front of their goal and they after a superb goalkeeper named Iker Cassillias. With us needing a lot of chances to score one goal I see the Spain Team with an advantage. They have in David Villa a striker who has yet to fail scoring when given the chance and without Thomas Müller I am afraid our attack department will be greatly diminshed. In my opinion neither Trochowski nor Kroos will be able to compensate his loss.
I really hope to be proven wrong but I'm afraid that we will see a match where one goal will decide the match as it did 2 years ago when we lost against Spain in the finale of the European Championship. Do I think of revenge for the lost finale?
No but I would love to prove to Spain that we are better now than we were back then.
It will take lots of running, lot's of power and the never-giving-up team spirit which I believe our players all have in them.
It's going to be a tough one but I believe in you :-)
Oh and if Netherlands does not beat Uruguay I will be in deeeeep shit betting wise ;-)

I guess I was wrong
Brazil played a wonderful halftime of beautiful football. And as though dozens scoring chances adds up to more than the one goal they had scored Brazil switched to defensive and game control. And that's when the goal for the netherlands came out of nowhere and gave them back their strenght. All of the sudden they had Brazil on their knees always appearing dangerously in front of the goal of Brazil. And I have to say in the end Netherland derserved to beat Brazil and Brazil derserved to be beaten.
And poor Ghana... they had like 10 chances to score the winning goal and their bad luck was highlighted by the penalty before the end of the extra time. Although I wanted to be right about Uruguay reaching the semifinals I really wanted Ghana to win because they would have derserved to win.

My first / quarter finals
So here I am bloggin away... who would have thunk ;-)
I'll be mainly blogging about football as the title indicates. I'll be starting with the world cup right away. The world Cup 8 years ago was what made me aware of the beautiful game and followed by the World Cup here in Germany the FIFA world Cup and our national team will always be something very very special for me.
So the two looong days of no football have finally come to an end. but fortunatel I had two things distracting me... both pleasant and annoying at the same time. No details needed... as it's not football related ;-)
First match today will be Brazil vs Netherlands. This is one match I'm not expecting much of. Both teams have proven their defensive abilities and how to control a match neglecting the beauty of forward football. I'm pretty sure that in the end we'll have seen a 1-0 and my guess is, it's going to be Brazil who'll score that one goal. And With soem bad liuck they'll be scoring that goal not in 90 but 120 minutes, giving us some extra time of football nobody wants to see. I hope the teams will prove me wrong but I won't get my hopes up.
Second match of the quarter finals will be Uruguay vs Ghana... That's right, both of those teams have managed the quarterfinals and one of them will be found in the semifinals... I still can't believe that, but it's simply a fact of convenient circumstances for both teams. For Uruguay it was France who opened them the door to the 8th final with a bow and retreated struggling rather with themselves than with the opponents in their group. South Korea was not an easy task in the 8th final but neither would they be in the same league with Brasil, Spain or Argentina.
But we have to admit that Ghana deserved their second place in the German group D. But still... wouldn't it have been lovely to be having Ghanas second place instead of the first place and not having to beat England and now Argentina?
We won't know. USA was definitely beatable but I'm not so sure about Uruguay. As easy as it may sound I think they've got quite a capable team and a Diego Forlan... Argentina, the devil you know, might be a better option than the team of Uruguay of whom I'm not yet sure how strong it really is. Anyways.. I'm sure they'll beat Ghana and we'll see what to make of that team when they are confronted with one of the strongest teams in this world cup: Brazil. Yes, I doubt that Netherlands has it in them to beat Brazil and yes, I don't WANT them to beat Brazil ;-)
